His latest solo offering, The Shadow of Your Smile, is a big-hearted, show-stopping collection drawing from the hits of Broadway, big band, smooth jazz and the Great American Songbook. These beloved standards and classics, newly arranged and powered by Charles’s larger-than-life voice, come together in a make-you-smile album of classic favorites.
Produced by Tim Davis (Barbra Streisand, Glee) and Wayne Haun (Celine Dion, Boyz II Men), iconic recordings like “It Had to Be You,” “Danny Boy,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “America, the Beautiful (feat. Voctave)” and “Bring Him Home” come alive in a brand-new way when paired with Charles’s smooth, beautifully engaging vocals.
“From the early days of hearing my parents playing vinyls of Sinatra and Pavarotti, I’ve had a love for great singers and classic songs,” says Charles. “After 30 years of making music, I felt like it was finally time to go back and record some of these great songs people love and enjoy so much. I especially love how the songs portray an uplifting, peaceful message.”
When considering which favorite songs to record, Charles focused on the overall theme of smile as a top priority. “I love the word smile and really wanted to play on that,” Charles says. “We titled the album after the track ‘The Shadow of Your Smile,’ because so many of us seem to have lost our smile in the last few years. I want to help bring it back.”
Centered around this hopeful outlook, Charles’s positive approach to life is subtly present throughout the project, making it more than a collection of well-known songs, but an album full of heart. With gorgeous orchestrations, energetic wow-factor tracks mixed with moments of meaningful contemplation, The Shadow of Your Smile offers a fresh take on familiar classics sure to bring a smile to listeners of all ages.
